‎Respect the Naira: CBN, EFCC’s Call for National Discipline

‎
‎In a renewed campaign to protect the dignity of Nigeria’s currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to end the abuse of the Naira.
‎
‎Citizens are being urged to treat the national currency with respect and responsibility, as the Naira represents far more than a medium of exchange — it symbolizes Nigeria’s identity and pride.
‎
‎The Naira is More than Money — It is Our National Pride
‎
‎Through ongoing public sensitization, the CBN reminds Nigerians that mishandling the Naira — spraying, squeezing, tearing, or illegally trading notes — is not only unlawful but also deeply unpatriotic.
‎
‎In a statement, the apex bank stressed: “Handling the Naira with care is our collective duty. Mishandling it shortens its lifespan and drains national resources. Let us respect our currency, embrace digital payments, and report all illegal sales. The Naira is a symbol of our sovereignty — let us protect it.
‎
‎The Bank urged Nigerians to maintain clean notes, avoid writing or stapling on them, and leverage electronic payment channels like mobile banking and POS services.
‎
‎Abuse of the Naira, under Section 21 of the CBN Act, 2007, attracts penalties ranging from six months’ imprisonment to fines of ₦50,000 or both.
‎
‎EFCC: “Abuse of the Naira Will no Longer be Tolerated”
‎
‎Aligning with the CBN’s campaign, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, commended Nigerians for the growing shift toward responsible currency handling. Speaking through EFCC spokesperson,
‎
‎ACE I Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede noted: “Across the country, the reckless abuse of the Naira is declining. Nigerians are now more aware that disrespecting our currency disrespects our nation.”
‎
‎The EFCC disclosed that it has secured nearly 50 convictions related to currency abuse in recent months. The Commission operates under Section 7(2) of its Establishment Act, which empowers it to enforce laws related to economic and financial crimes, including Naira abuse.
‎
‎Olukoyede warned that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and penalties are non-negotiable.
‎
‎Beyond enforcement, the EFCC is deploying aggressive public enlightenment campaigns, using traditional, digital, and indigenous language channels to reach all corners of the country.
‎
‎A Call to Patriotism
‎
‎The CBN and EFCC’s partnership sends a clear and resounding message: protecting the Naira is a matter of national honor.
‎
‎The Naira must not be sprayed at parties, mutilated, or traded illegally. Every Nigerian, from markets to boardrooms, is called upon to uphold the integrity of the national currency.
‎
‎Our money reflects who we are. Respecting the Naira is respecting Nigeria.
