Public Analyst Ejike Okpa Defends Trump-Era Tariffs as Necessary Economic Strategy
Amid ongoing debates about the legacy of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies, public affairs analyst Ejike Okpa has defended the administration’s use of tariffs, describing them as a strategic tool to balance trade, protect domestic industries, and ensure economic sovereignty.
In a commentary titled “The ABCD of Tariff – KISS: Keeping It Simply Straight”, Okpa argued that while tariffs may cause short-term discomfort, they serve a broader purpose of strengthening national economies. “A little pain before the gain,” he stated, summing up his stance on the controversial trade measures.

According to Okpa, tariffs function on three pillars: revenue generation, trade restriction, and reciprocity. They are, he said, “an aspect of international trade to favor trading partners on the balance of trade systems.” Without proper checks, he warned, importing countries risk becoming “dumping grounds” for foreign goods, stifling local production and weakening national industries.
“Tariff ought to encourage domestic expansion in areas where one has comparative advantages,” he emphasized, referring to the classic economic concept of ‘barrier to entry’ as a way to enhance value and protect strategic sectors.
Okpa described international trade as inherently political, noting that the “politics of business” often results in compromise agreements that are temporary and not always favorable. “No country worth its value should be a dumping ground,” he cautioned.
He acknowledged the globalized nature of the world economy but stressed the importance of national interests. “While it is a globalized world, we do not have a global country, so protect yourself,” he advised.
Explaining the mechanics of tariffs, Okpa identified two main types: those that apply broadly to all imports from a country, and those that target specific items.
Offering to further engage in public discourse, Okpa expressed interest in publishing his thoughts on media platforms or participating in interviews to expand the conversation.
