FG to Boost Climate-Resilient Farming in Bauchi – Minister
By Umar Farouk Bala
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to boosting food security while safeguarding farmers and pastoralists from land dispossession.
He made this known during a community engagement in Udobo, Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, last Saturday.
Tuggar emphasized President Tinubu’s administration’s resolve to support agricultural productivity through rural empowerment, climate-resilient farming, and science-driven initiatives.
Udobo, once a major agricultural hub in the 1960s and 70s, has suffered setbacks due to climate change, floods, and declining investments.
Addressing local farmers, Tuggar assured them that the government is working to restore the area’s agricultural prominence.
“This land fed nations. We aim to revive that legacy without displacing those who till it.”
The Minister dispelled concerns over land grabbing and encouraged farmers to prioritize self-sufficiency.
“No one will lose their land. Grow what you eat first; we will help you sell the surplus.”
To mitigate the impact of erratic weather patterns and floods, Tuggar announced that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), would optimize water access through Udobo’s fadama wetlands.

The initiative will introduce modern irrigation systems and climate-smart agricultural tools to improve productivity.
Additionally, Tuggar highlighted the government’s support for flood victims in the region, citing diplomatic engagements that secured funding from ECOWAS and federal agencies to develop climate-resilient infrastructure.
Residents of Udobo welcomed the government’s interventions. Aisha Muhammad, a local farmer, expressed gratitude for the renewed focus on agriculture.
“The fertilizers provided will help us prepare for the upcoming rainy season.”
Musa Adamu Udobo, a youth leader, called for sustained support for young farmers to curb rural-urban migration.
“Empowerment must reach young farmers to prevent migration. We appreciate the Minister’s efforts and hope for continued support.”
Ambassador Tuggar reiterated President Tinubu’s pledge to ease economic hardship through microcredit schemes and subsidized agricultural machinery.
“Pain is temporary; progress is permanent. Microcredit schemes and subsidized machinery will soon follow.”
He also emphasized the connection between food security and national security, urging continuous investment in the agricultural sector.
“Food security is national security. Udobo’s revival symbolizes our resolve: a Nigeria where no farmer fears progress.”
The Minister’s visit is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector and ensure food self-sufficiency across rural communities.
