FG, Japan Collaborate for Development of Northern Nigeria
The Ministry of Regional Development has commenced talks with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to explore potential areas of collaboration aimed at developing the North East, North West, and North Central regions of the country.
The Minister of State, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, who recently paid a working visit to the JICA office in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, stated that the partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria-Japan relations.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by the ministry’s Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit, Abdulrashid Y. Safana.
“There is a need for a robust partnership between the two entities, focusing on key development areas such as housing settlements, infrastructural development, vocational training, and youth empowerment.
“Our core mandate and areas of focus underscore the importance of synergy and operational efficiency among the commissions under the ministry’s jurisdiction. We are committed to fulfilling the ministry’s obligations to the regions, particularly those affected by insurgency and economic challenges.
“My recent visit to Borno State, a region devastated by Boko Haram insurgents, reinforced the need for revolutionary projects and infrastructural development. I remain optimistic that the proposed collaboration with JICA could fast-track development in these regions.
“Hence, this partnership will provide a structured approach to infrastructure revitalization, economic empowerment, and capacity development, strengthening the nation’s resilience and fostering long-term stability,” the statement read in part.
On his part, JICA’s Chief Representative to Nigeria, Susumu Yuzurio, expressed willingness to explore areas of collaboration while outlining the agency’s strategy in Nigeria, which focuses on “sustainable and resilient society, inclusive health and medical systems, and peace and stability.”
