Fuel Price Hike Cripples Business Activities in Abuja
By Salim Yunusa
The Utako district in Abuja Municipal Area Council, typically a bustling suburb, was eerily deserted on Thursday afternoon due to the worsening fuel scarcity and recent price hike.
The price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, has increased significantly, from around N600 to N855/litre, depending on the location and vendor.
This sudden surge has resulted in long fuel queues at the few operational fueling stations, leaving tricyclists, motorists, and traders stranded. The scarcity has also led to a significant increase in transportation costs, with prices rising by 50-100% in the district.
Consequently, businesses, particularly in the food sector, have raised their prices, causing discontent among residents. Many were seen lamenting at local joints and shops, expressing frustration with the government’s handling of the situation.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “The government seems to find new ways to frustrate citizens every day. Now, all activities are paralyzed, and people can’t afford to move around and earn a living. I eagerly await the 2027 elections to democratically remove them from office.”
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is expected to meet with oil marketers to discuss the new petrol price and strategies to end the prolonged fuel scarcity plaguing the nation.
