VC Wants Autonomy for Tertiary Institutions
The vice chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Prof. (Engr.) Akpofure Rim-Ruroh, has urged the federal government to implement the autonomy act 2004 and grant independence to the country’s tertiary institutions.
He made the call at the Daily Asset’s 6th annual awards and lecture where he spoke on “Funding Options for Tertiary Education in Nigeria: A Note to Policy Makers.”
Akpofure said universities need the independence to be able to make certain decisions as it concerns the growth and development of the institution especially in the area of funding.
The one-time vice chancellor of the year award winner further stated that vice chancellors and the necessary authorities of universities should look into business ventures to generate more funds for the institutions.
The Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Daily Asset Newspaper, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, while giving his closing remarks, further emphasised the need for autonomy for tertiary institutions, calling on the media and civil society to join the crusade.
