Ayine Tasks African SAIs on Impact-Driven Environmental Audits
The Auditor-General for the Federation, Mr. Anthony Mkpe Ayine, has urged Supreme Audit Institutions in the African region to rise up to the challenges confronting their environment and carryout impact-driven environmental audits that will enhance biodiversity conservation and this generation and future ones from the harmful effects of global warming and climate change.
Ayine was speaking as Chairman of the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions Working Group on Environmental Audit (AFROSAI WGEA) at the 10th meeting of the body which held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While noting that tackling multiple environmental challenges can be daunting, he tasked auditors to regularly improve their operations as well as identify what pressing environmental issues are currently facing the continent and work together in protecting the environment so that we can experience sustainable development.
“It is important that we constantly examine our focus as a group to ensure that we are effectively addressing the most important environmental challenges and strengthening our engagements with other stakeholders in the climate action space,” Ayine said.
He added: “It is my expectation that our discussion and deliberations will generate fresh ideas and fresh perspectives into how we can advance our efforts towards achieving the environmental dimension of the sustainable development goals”.
The Chairman also stated that the coronavirus emergency had enabled the AFROSAI WGEA host its first virtual, climate neutral, plastic and paper-free meeting. The 10th meeting of the AFROSAI WGEA held from 6th-8th October, 2020.
