No Insurance Firm Coerced to Donate to COVID-Relief Fund- NAICOM
The apex Insurance regulator, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has denied media(online) report that it coerced insurance operators in the country to make donations in the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19)
An Online medium had said that NAICOM in a circular to insurance operators forced them to make donations to the tune of N10 million to the fight the pandemic.
Rasaaq Salami, spokesperson of the regulator in a whatsapp message to Economic Confidential expressed total disappointment over the report, adding that it was false, malicious and misleading.
Salami noted that the commission only enjoined the firms to support government and good-hearted individuals to fight the scourge in the country.
“This report is not only false and misleading but mischievous. It is a deliberate attempt to embarrass the Commission.
“No insurance company is being compelled or forced to contribute to the COVID-19 fund. NAICOM only requested the support of insurance companies further to the agreement between her, the Nigeria Insurers Association (NIA) and the Nigerian Council for Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) for a coordinated effort towards making a consolidated contribution to the fund as an industry,” he said.
He urged the public to disregard the report as it is inaccurate and biased.
