NCC: MTN, Airtel Lead In 229.3bn National Calls
MTN and Airtel have taken the lead in the volume of calls routed through the networks in 2018, the latest industry report from the Nigerian Communications Commission has indicated.
The 2018 Subscriber and Network Data Report showed that a total of 229.29 billion outgoing and incoming local and national traffic were channelled through six network operators.
As of December 2018, the total outgoing local and national traffic was 121.94 billion while total incoming local and national traffic was 107.35 billion.
It added that MTN had the highest total outgoing and incoming telephone traffic of 90.57 billion and 87.06 billion, respectively in 2018, accounting for 77.47 per cent of the total national incoming and outgoing traffic.
Airtel came behind MTN with 16.63 billion outgoing call traffic and 13.32 billion incoming call traffic, representing 13.06 per cent of the total national outgoing and incoming call traffic.
9mobile ranked third with a total of 12.03 billion call traffic in 2018,comprising 5.15 billion outgoing traffic and 6.88 billion incoming traffic, representing 5.25 per cent of the total national call traffic.
Globacom had a total of 8.68 billion outgoing traffic and 26.47 billion incoming traffic, representing 3.8 per cent of the national incoming and outgoing traffic and clinching the fourth position.
Ntel came fifth with 769.01 million outgoing calls and 58.96million incoming call traffic, representing 0.36 per cent of the national figure.
Smile had the least call traffic of 151.44 million, comprising 140.57 million outgoing calls and 10.87 million incoming calls, representing 0.07 per cent of the national figure.
Based on the performance of network operators in the international call traffic category, the industry had a total of 2.34 billion international calls from six operators.
MTN led with a total of 1.56 billion outgoing and incoming call traffic, representing 66.79 per cent of the total international figure.
Airtel ranked second with a total of 398.45 million outgoing and incoming call traffic, representing 17.06 per cent of the international call traffic.
In third place was Globacom with 296.47 million outgoing and incoming call traffic, indicating 12.69 per cent of the total international figure.
9mobile came in fourth with 3.42 per cent, based on 79.77 million outgoing and incoming calls.
Ntel had a total of 724,652 outgoing and incoming calls in 2018, representing 0.03 per cent of the total international call traffic.
Smile had the least international call traffic at 288,482, representing 0.01 per cent of the total figure.
In the Voice over Internet Protocol category, a total of 186.1 billion outgoing and incoming calls were recorded in the industry.
VoIP is the transmission of voice and multimedia content over internet protocol networks.
MTN also led with 143.34 billion outgoing and incoming mobile to mobile minutes, representing 77.02 per cent of the total VoIP to VoIP calls in 2018.
This was followed by Airtel with 21.94 billion GSM to GSM calls, representing 11.79 per cent of the total call traffic.
Globacom ranked third with 8.7 billion mobile to mobile calls, indicating 4.68 per cent of the total VoIP figure.
9mobile was in the fourth position with 11.14 billion incoming and outgoing VoIP calls, representing 5.99 per cent of the total figure.
This was followed by Ntel with 0.44 per cent of the total VoIP traffic, amount to 827.97 million incoming and outgoing VoIP calls.
Smile came last with 151.44 million VoIP traffic, representing 0.08 per cent of the total figure.
