
NERC, 4 Others Share N882m Power Service Charge From Niger, Benin Republics
Two international electricity customers, Niger Electricity (NIGELEC) and Communauté Electrique du Bénin (CEB) have paid $10.104 million (about N3.651 billion) electricity debts they owed Nigeria.
An update of electricity payments report released by the Market Operator (MO), a business unit under TCN showed that NIGELEC (Niger) paid $3.788m while CEB (Benin) paid $6.316m totalling $10.104m.
The breakdown shows the money was paid for two service segments in the Nigerian Electricity Market (NEM) being handled by separate agencies.
While the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) got 77.4 percent of the payment amounting to $7.828m (about N2.828m), MO got $2.276m (about N822.432m) representing 22.5 percent of the paid sum.
The MO report further disclosed how the N822.4m paid for ancillary services was shared among the five Ancillary Service Providers (ASPs).
The Transmission Service Provider (TSP), another business unit of TCN got $1.854m (about N669.943m), the highest payment for energy it transmitted to the two countries.
The System Operation (SO), a business unit in TCN got the second highest payment of $201,115 (about N72.672m); the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the power industry regulator, got $198,550 (N71.746m) from the energy payment by Niger and Benin Republics.
The MO itself received $12,229 (N4.419m) for its services, and NBET received $10,323 (N3.730m).
Nigeria, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) delivers about 60 percent of the energy requirement of Niger and Benin Republics from the national grid.
The Daily Trust reports that MO handles payment for ancillary services from the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos), and the international customers that include Niger, Benin and Togo too. NBET collects payment for energy delivery to the DisCos by the GenCos.
Although, there was no report from NBET, it is mandated to disburse the $7.828m (N2.828m) for energy delivery to the countries to the respective GenCos that include Jebba and Kainji GenCos, among others.
