Dangote lauds NBA on IDPs’ Legal Rights and Protection
President, Dangote Foundation, Aliko Dangote, has lauded initiative of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to train Lawyers to improve legal rights and protection of Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in North-east, Nigeria
The 4-Day training workshop, in conjunction with a Bar organisation dedicated to International Human Rights-the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC), commenced on 12, February, at the International Training Institute, Maitama, FCT, Abuja.
Dangote said the training will increase capacity of lawyers to promote the rule of law in the country.
He said the foundation was partnering NBA in this effort to share its own values and objectives on humanitarian service in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in improving the welfare of not only IDPs, but the generality of Nigerians, and the African continent.
The foundation had doled out billions of Naira to the displaced persons aside donations of foods, relief materials, provision of clothings, primary health centres, immunisations and their resettlement.
The role played by Dangote foundation in assisting IDPs had attracted tremendous global attention and partnership drive for the resusitation of the North-east region.
Dangote was represented by CEO Dangote foundation, Mrs. Zouera Youssoufou.
Dangote said NBA’s ‘Legal Rights and Protection’, strategy is certainly in the right direction and plight of the IDPs calls for critical strategies by the different sectors for their development.
Represented by Dangote Rep, Hashem Ahmed, Zouera said the training will enhance the Law profession and boost humanitarian responsibility of Nigerians. She called for critical strategies by the different sectors for development of the IDPs.
The workshop was declared open by the NBA President, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud, SAN, who also signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the BHRC, represented by its Chairwoman, Kirsty Brimelow QC of the Doughty Street Chambers and Professor Muhammed Tabiu, SAN.
A B. Mahmoud indicated that the legal rights and protection of IDPs is a call to duty for lawyers and urged participants to take advantage of the rare privilage.
The Foreword, of the training Manual, signed by Chairwoman of BHRC, Kirsty Brimelow said the BHRC’s core objective is to provide pro-bono legal support and remedies for judges, lawyers and human rights defenders as well as the vulnerable and disempowered members of the society.
