The Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Nigeria have come out in defense of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Economic Team and the monetary policies of the Central bank of Nigeria(CBN) led by Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
In a protest led by the President of the Coalition Mr. Etuk Bassey Williams which kicked off at the premises of the Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) in Abuja, the group said the recent outright condemnation by a small phony group of President Buhari’s Economic Team, and lately monetary policies of the CBN were unacceptable, noting that “We stand by our President to revive the ailing economy”.
The group numbering over 900 carried several placards with various inscriptions such as “We stand by Buhari and Emefiele”, “Give Buhari a chance to revive the economy” and “ We say no to sacking of Emefiele” also went round many streets in the Central Business Area of the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking to newsmen at the end of the protest, Williams said that the policies of the Emefiele and the CBN are aimed at protecting ordinary Nigerians from the destructive capitalistic instincts of a few big shots and well-to-do in the society.
Etuk Bassey Williams further said that “While we appreciate the difficulties and anxieties of many Nigerians given the tough economic times that are confronting us, this situation was not caused by one man or one institution and therefore, it is rather unfair to try to put the blame on any one person or organization.
He noted that the anti-corruption stance of the current administration was a welcome development as it had in the past slowed the country’s growth economically, adding that no person or group should blame the economic team or Emefiele’s monetary policies, especially those that have been at the vanguard of protecting ordinary Nigerians from the disastrous effects of the global shocks due to the sharp drop in oil prices.
