
Determined to find a way out of the current recession bedevilling the nation as quickly as possible, the Senate will, on resumption, begin debate on the economic crisis.
The debate, will be led by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, through his welcome speech to Senators from the seven weeks recess, upon which the upper chamber will go into a closed door session to receive submissions from economic experts on actual state of economy.
The Senate leadership and caucuses of the two major political parties (APC and PDP) met yesterday evening preparatory to the debate already slated to span a period of two months as disclosed by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Kaka Bashir Garbai (APC, Borno Central).
Making the disclosure to journalists in his office yesterday, Garbai said because of serious hardship Nigeria’s are going through as a result of the recession, the Senate has programmed for itself two months of critical dissection of the problem at hand in session.
According to him, during the period, the upper will identify what led to the economic crisis, as well as find possible way out of it in collaboration with the executive arm of government.
He added that, in spite of the emergency posed by the economic downturn, the upper chamber will in the coming weeks also consider the report of the Senate committee on Foreign Affairs seeking confirmation of 47 career ambassadorial nominees.
He said: “We have also seen that people are actually going through a lot if hardship because of the various problems we are undergoing as a result of the economic recession in the country.
“The discussions, particularly within the next two months in the Senate will be dominated by issues relating to economy, especially how to rescue the economy out of the recession we are currently facing. This will dominate this legislative session.
“We will actually have discussions bothering on recession. Some will be open to everybody in the plenary, and we will also have a close door session, where we will hold discussions with some resource persons in relation to the recession.
