The federal government said that the Boko Haram insurgency has created 49,000 orphans in Borno State.
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed this at the State House Abuja when he received a delegation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“These are young children, some of them saw their parents killed,” he stated, and assured of the federal government’s intervention in the lives of the orphans.
Osinbajo said efforts were also being made towards the deradicalisation of people rescued from Boko Haram’s captivity.
“The critical thing is improving the lives of people generally and we’re working as hard as possible to ensure that. It is a lot of work, especially at a time when the economy is not doing as well as it could,” he said.
The acting president lauded the JICA for collaborating with the federal government.
Earlier, JICA President Professor Shinichi Kitaoka said his country was seeking excellent relations with Nigeria.
The JICA is the agency that implements Official Development Assistance (ODA) of Japan to developing countries.
