FG Reappoints Bello Mahmud as RG CAC
President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the reappointment of Malam Bello Mahmud for a second term in office as Registrar General and Chief Executive of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Mahmud, whose tenure as chief executive officer of the Commission expires at the end of this month was first appointed head of the Commission in October, 2009.
A highly reliable source in the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment confirmed to the Economic Confidential that President Jonathan approved a recommendation by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, for the reappointment of Mahmud as CEO of the Commission.
The source further disclosed that “the trade and investment minister has already communicated Mr. President’s approval to the Board of Directors of the CAC”.
Mahmud is credited to be behind the practical steps that ensured that state offices of the agency have become not only very functional, but also at par with the head office in all aspects of registration services during his first four years as RG.
Similarly, the incumbent chief executive is reputed to have nudged the CAC higher by ensuring that the Commission’s dream of 24-hour registration of companies has become a reality.
Some of his achievements during the first tenure included the decentralization of CAC offices where branches could initiate and conclude business registrations without recourse to the head office; Introduction of CAC Company Regulations 2012; Iso certification; the ability of directors and first subscribers of companies(company owners) being able to register companies by themselves and succeeded in eliminating touting in the commission.
Some of these achievements, the Economic Confidential learnt, were responsible for the significant increase in the number of registered business entities in the country from less than 1.2 million in December, 2009 to almost 3 million by December, 2011.
Bello Mahmud, a lawyer and one time chairman of the Sokoto state branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), had prior to joining the CAC as a director served as attorney-general and commissioner for justice in Sokoto state from 1996 to 1999.
