Yobe State government has distributed 500 bags of assorted grains to widows, orphans and the disabled in the state. Governor Gaidam said that the grains were procured at the cost of N6,000 per bag during the last harvest season when the cost was N3000, adding that “the intention was to encourage farmers to sustain production, stabilize food prices and avoid unnecessary exploitation by middlemen.”
He said that out of the N12,000 bags of assorted grains reserve, N11,700 would be sold at a highly subsidized rate of N2,000 per bag, while 500 bags would be distributed free to the disabled, orphans and widows. The governor also directed all the local government council chairmen to supervise strictly the sales of the grains to ensure effective sales and proper accounting and remittance of the proceeds.
