The Yobe State government has approved the procurement and distribution of 6,000 metric tons of fertilizer to supplement the state’s 11, 500 metric at N781 million.
The rehabilitation of the state- owned Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC), has also been approved by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam at a total cost of N224 million.
Meanwhile in another development the governor of the State has revoked the contract for construction of 60-kilometer Nguru-Machina road, first awarded during the previous administration of former Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim.
The governor announced the revocation of the contract during a visit to the project site as part of his tour of ongoing and completed road projects across the state.
He expressed disappointment that despite the huge resources expended on the road, the level of work attained so far had been ‘woefully disappointing’.
He said the road was initially awarded at the cost of N2 billion by the previous administration to A.K CONSTRUCTION LTD but in 2007 when the current administration first came to power, the contract was reviewed to N2.4 billion.
“Despite the review and our determination to ensure completion, the contractor continues to be slow and even inactive. Moreso, the quality of work leaves much to be desired”, Geidam said.
The governor asked the State Ministry of Works to establish contact with the contractor and open up discussions with a view to getting him to pay back the balance of money paid by the government but for which no work was executed.
The governor also explained his administration’s particular commitment to the roads sector, saying the focus on opening up the state through various road projects was to make movement easier and facilitate economic and social activities.
He said during the 2011 electioneering campaign based on requests from various communities, he had pledged to build a total of 750 kilometres of roads before 2015, adding that within a year, some 30 per cent of the target had been met.
