Kwankwaso decries dirtiness in Kano markets

kanomktKano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has expressed displeasure over the filth littering markets and their environs in Kano metropolis, warning that his government would henceforth take stern measures to make sure that unwholesome environment does not prevail in the state capital.

He stated emphatically that he “was willing to deal with any market association, Interim Local Government Management Officer or the State Sanitation Agency, REMASAB who failed in their responsibility to ensure that the markets and adjoining streets are more convenient for business transactions”.

Governor Kwankwaso who was obviously furious over the dirt that have become a common sights in market streets in the state wondered why the relevant stakeholders in the markets cannot keep them clean despite the fact that the state government is doing its best to enhance environmental sanitation.

The Governor expressed the discontent during a meeting with the Interim Management Officers of the eight mMetropolitan Local Government Councils’ leaders of traders associations from several markets and the management of REMASAB at the Government House in Kano.

Kwankwaso warned:” We will not condone any indiscriminate dumping of refuse in our markets and other strategic places. These things are not only eye sore but will lead to outbreak of diseases”. The Governor therefore directed market associations to come up with sustainable ideas on how to keep the markets and surrounding streets tidy always.

In his remarks, the State Deputy Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje explained that keeping Kano clean, especially its markets, was a collective responsibility, hence the need for traders in the state to join hands with the government to make the environment tidy.
Responding on behalf the traders, Alhaji Sharu Nafi’u who promised to support the government in its keep Kano clean drive advised it to set aside special refuse spots in the markets for refuse disposal.
