Because of popular demands of Nigerians to know the actual and official duty tour allowances for local and foreign travels of their legislators at federal, state and local governments, the Economic Confidential reproduces here its Exclusive report it published in its edition of August 2008. The reason behind frequent foreign trips by some legislators may not be out of place. Apart from undertaking such foreign trips for capacity building and networking with other legislators across the Globe, the legislators receive Estacode, the monetary allowance in foreign currency for the trips. The Economic Confidential gathered that the Estacode, mostly paid in US dollars, the legislators also have the local component in Naira Denomination as Duty Tour Allowance while travelling within the country.
In a table provided by the Economic Confidential, the estacodes of the Senate President is $1,300, Speaker $1,000, Deputy Senate President $790, Deputy Speaker $750, Senator $600 and Member of the House of Representatives $550.
At the state level, Speaker of the State Assembly receives $450, Deputy Speaker $400, Member $370. The legislators at local councils are not left out as Legislative Leader collects for foreign trip $225, Deputy Legislative Leader $220 and Councilor $210.
The Duty Tour Allowances for legislators while travelling within Nigeria are: Senate President N37,000, Deputy Senate President N32,000, Senator 23,000, Speaker of House of Rep. N35,000, Deputy Speaker N30,000 and Member N21,000. On the other hand the Speaker of State Assembly receives N17,000, Deputy Speaker N15,000 and Member N14,000.
At the Local Government level, a Legislative Leader N8,600, Deputy Legislative Leader N8,500 and Legislative Councilor N8,000.
The allowances are applicable on approved trips for medical treatment, seminars, conferences and social gathering. They excluded other allowances like transportation, cost of the programmes and other contingencies that are to be determined by their respective accounting officers.
There are special privileges that are not monetized which the government can provide IN KIND for the legislators. They include Provisions of Special Assistant, Security, Medical Treatment and Legislative Aides. The table is exclusively provided below by the Economic Confidential.
