The Federal government has released the list of recipients for 2009 National Honours Awards containing names of the good and surprising personalities. In the list obtained by the Economic Confidential shows that most of the awardees are public and political office holders whose major credentials for the recognition are the offices they occupy. Some of them have received similar awards few years ago. Few others are traditional and religious leaders.
The Economic Confidential gathers that the original list was submitted to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua while he was alive. After his demise the list was further panel-beaten to accommodate some interests. Some personalities were substituted or demoted in the ranking of titles at the last hour.
In the final list there is no single recipient for the nation’s highest honours of GCFR. There are 13 awardees for the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), 27 to receive Commander of the Niger (CON), 43 will get Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), 46 to be given Order of the Niger (OON), 22 will have Members of the Federal Republic (MFR) and 25 will be honoured with the Members of the Niger (MON). Four others will get FRM I and three to be bestowed with FRM II.
While Wayas will get the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) with former Chief of General Staff, Rear Admiral Mike Akhigbe and present Chief Justice of the Federation Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, those next in the ranking title of CFR are Former Finance Minister, Dr. Okonjo Iweala, former past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Patricia Etteh and Hon Ghali Umar Na’Abba and Chief of Staff to President Jonathan, Chief Mike Oghiadhome.
Sanusi and Otedola will be awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) while Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mrs. Farida Waziri will get OFR.
In the CON category, the names include former governors: Brig. Gen David Bamgboye and Shaaba Lafiaji both of Kwara, Alhaji Balarabe Musa of Kaduna, Alhaji Lateef Jakande of Lagos, Dr Sam Egwu of Ebonyi and Chief Felix Ibru of Delta. Others for CON include former Director of Defence and Military Intelligence during President Ibrahim Babangida, Brig. Gen Haliru Akilu and former Petroleum Minister during Mohammed Buhari administration, Prof Tam David-West .
Some of the awardees for OFR include Foreign Affairs Minister Odein Ajumogobia, Commerce and Industry Minister Jubril Martins-Kuye. The Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam abubakar Jijiwa is to get MFR.
